Firefighter Research About Nicotine and Tobacco in California
A community-driven project focused on preventing smokeless tobacco and nicotine pouch use among rural firefighters.
Firefighter Research About Nicotine & Tobacco In California (FRANTIC) is a Community Based Participatory Research pilot project that is being conducted in collaboration with PIRE-CA (Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation).
The aim of FRANTIC is to uncover the factors that can be used to interrupt the initiation of smokeless tobacco (SLT) and nicotine pouch (NP) use among new cohorts of rural California firefighters.
Educating & Empowering Firefighters
Based on their direct knowledge and experience, the Community Advisory Board (CAB) will provide input and guidance on a variety of project activities, including the development of key informant interview protocols, suggesting key informants to interview, interpretation of key informant interview findings, identification of key administrative staff and groups to engage, development of educational materials, and recruitment of focus groups to test materials. The CAB will also play an important role in interpreting and disseminating initial project findings to fire service and public health groups, especially in rural California counties.
Community Advisory Board Mission
Community Based Participatory Research
Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is a collaborative approach to research that involves community partners in designing and implementation. CBPR begins with a topic that is important to the community and recognizes the importance of combining knowledge with action and using community to achieve social change.
